I am Laura. I trained as a primary school teacher and taught for eight years before leaving the classroom to raise our two children. What I noticed then is the thing I still think about now: most parents want to help their child at home, but the language schools use around phonics is unfamiliar, and the guidance they receive is often too general to act on.
The parents I met at parents' evenings were not disengaged. They were anxious. They did not know what a phoneme was. They did not know whether they were saying the sounds correctly. They worried that if they practised at home they might contradict the teacher. So many of them quietly did nothing, and then felt guilty about that too.
My husband David built Legible with me. He handles the technical side, the app itself, and the day-to-day operations. I hold the pedagogy, the voice, and the question of whether any given decision is actually useful for a parent or just looks like it is.
Who Legible is for
Parents of children aged four to eight, in state-school settings in England.
Legible's phonics assessment is permanently free. We plan to charge a modest subscription for guided practice sessions after the current pilot. Families on free school meals or other means-tested support will have free or reduced access; we are working out the mechanics of this honestly and will publish them before we start charging anyone.
